Western Prems V’s Ferrymead Bays
Wednesday Night @ English Park
After playing Ferrymead on Saturday and managing a 2-1 Victory the girls where keen to prove that they deserved their win. Not being notorious for having any luck on English Park we needed a big effort to back up and take the 3 points we need to stay in the run for the title.
The changing room before the game was relaxed with some good tunes playing; everyone was gearing up for another tuff game. Ferrymead have a never die attitude and play an uncompromising game of football.
As the game started we fell into the trap that we fall into far too often. Having all the position but not being able to capitalize on it! And then they get a “against the play” break away and we find our up hill battle beginning. Never the less we didn’t panic and continued to play the way we wanted to. After a lot of perseverance and determination we finally hit the back of the net from yet another screamer of a volley from Leigh. Astoundingly five minutes later we found the ball sitting up nicely for her again, and yet again she managed to wallop it between the posts.
Half time 2-1 up. 45 minutes left of our challenge. In the changing rooms we managed to sort out a few positional perplexities that had occurred in the first half.
The second half was a lot like the first. Ferrymead never stopped pressuring and where very fast on the break. They created there chances as much as we did. Dayna played a great game at right back considering it was her 2nd time ever playing there. Alice, Leigh and Ollie would have run a couple of marathons during the game. With there selfless runs from attack into defense.
JC managed to get the next goal from just outside of the box, which put us into a much more comfortable position. 20 minutes to go and Ferrymead’s right half made a first-class run down her flank, crossing the ball to Clare who cleanly finished it bringing Bays back to 2-3.
The bench spent the last 10 minutes of the game on the edge of there seats as Ferrymead made another great attack. To our credit Mel and Shaz where not going to let them in, which they did and we finished up at 3-2 win to the Mighty Western
We all would like to wish Hannah best wishes for her travel to Canada

Well to start the season off our coach was very sorry to tell us that he could no longer take us this year as he had just brought a new house that needed a lot of TLC.
So myself and Lynne have taken over the job of being coach. Lynne takes the trainings, and due to my ankle, on Sunday I take the team.
We have a couple of new players in the team, some of them have played for Western since before Adam was a cowboy.
So far for the season we have only lost one game, that was to Burnside (which has a team of girls that were in the prem grade last year) and with the youth and speed they were able to beat us on the park.
We were due to play Halswell 4 games ago when the weather cancelled all the games for the weekend.

This weekend the ref called off the game as there was too much ICE and snow on Warren Park and I think that most of the girls were glad to get home to the warm fire.
Our team has a lot of injuries this season so far, Tanya out for this and half next season having knee op in 2 weeks time, Bex’s in her drunken state broke her ankle 5 weeks ago, Paula pulled a hammy or some would say OLD AGE and Chris has had Achilles problems. We have had to call on a couple of young ones from the U19 team and they have fitted in well. We hope to have Paula, Chris and Morghan back and on the field in 4 weeks, that’s if they don’t hurt themselves while off overseas.
Not much else to say except GO THE MIGHTY WESTERN!!!!!!
Thanks for reading.

Western Women’s Premier vs Halswell (2/6/08)
After a disappointing loss last weekend against bottom of the table Avon, the girls had their heads down and had lost a lot of confidence. We knew we had to start on a fresh page and dominate Halswell for 90 min to remain in the running for the title. With help from Peter on Wednesday night the team went over individual responsibilities and the new formation. A game plan was made and to win they needed to stick to it. We also set a goal to achieve a clean sheet.
The game began exceptionally well. We maintained great shape and had majority of the position. The girls were playing well, yet didn’t manage to put any of our many shots away. Rachel Oliver continued to make dominating runs down the left flank and was putting some exceptional balls into the box. The four backs where switching the play smoothly and keeping great control of the game. For the first time this season we were managing to get numbers in the box to support the quality we where receiving. Halswell defense stayed strong for the first 45 minutes and we found ourselves nil all at half time.
Half time over and the girls knew they had to stay patient and continue to play the way they were. We won a corner and Kelly Jardon put a gorgeous ball across to the far post for the always-strong J.C to hammer it home to begin our scoring.
The urgency remained, and there was a real want to secure the lead with another goal. Halswell battled hard and made it a challenge for our girls to stick to the game plan. We improved on the right side of the field in the second half. Aimee really started to show some flare and Emily continued to make energetic runs down her side.
Our second goal came from Leigh Alexander. It was a ripper first time volley from yet another gifted Rachel Oliver cross. Leigh didn’t mess around to score her second. But I didn’t see that one so you can just make it up!!! Megan had a level-headed and stable game, which helped us achieve our goals that we set at half time. All round performance was great. Kelly and the team have turned a new leaf and plan to dictate the rest of there season.

Western Women’s Division 3 V’s Rolleston Womens (18/5/08)
The sun was shining bright as we kicked off what we planned to be our first win of the season. We started off strong and had most of the possesion but struggled to get a solid shot on target. Teresa was making plenty of dominating runs down the right flank. Using her speed and ever improving skill to out class their left back. In the 31st minute she put a perla of a cross in to the mixer and Vete (2nd ever game) managed to beat their players to get a crack at goal.
Unfortunately for us their keeper got a finger to it and knocked it left of the post. We got the corner and it was eventually cleared, after a quarrel in the box. Shannon won the ball on the half way line and put threw a cracker of a ball to our “little battler” Janelle, who then raced passed Rolleston’s defense and then their keeper to score a magnificent first goal of the game. Moral was high, as this was only our 3rd goal this season!!!!
Half time finally came and we were winning 1-0 for the first time. The second half bought a change of play and Rolleston picked up their game to make the match a bigger battle. Mel and Renee our twin centre backs kept good control of the back line and kept their strikers quiet until the 22nd minute of the second half. Rolleston’s striker showed great pace and swiftly moved passed our defense line and smashed one into the back of the net.
Before we knew it she manages to do it again and we find our selves 2-1 down. To my girls credit they showed immense effort and continued to improve their some what unnatural abilities. Holly got mongrel and won some epic headers in the middle of the park, she also showed that “she’s got toe” when on numerous accounts, she threatened their winning score line by getting in behind their defense. We manage to get a few more shots on goal from our warrior in the middle of the park Leanne. We were in the game up until we got corner and Mum jumped 3 foot in the air to head it home. Unfortunately it was our goal and it put Rolleston in a 3-1 lead. Being out done by experience and aggression we still find our selves with the wooden spoon. Never the less the girls are improving every game and should be proud of there efforts.
This week, the girls are playing at Warren Park, 10.30am kick off. Good Luck for that first win.
